Custom Trip to Sri Lanka
Sigiriya at sunrise, elephants in Yala, the blue train through tea country.
Sri Lanka fits in a territory the size of Ireland — what it packs in is hard to believe. Sigiriya, the fortress perched on a 200-meter rock, is best climbed at dawn when mist still wraps the plain below. The Sigiriya Damsels, frescoes painted in the 5th century, remain intact.
The train from Kandy to Ella crosses highland tea plantations for 7 hours. Windows open. Scenery shifting at every bend. Less than 3 euros in second class. It’s often called one of the world’s most beautiful rail journeys, and the claim holds up.

What are the best hikes and safaris in Sri Lanka?
Ella is a small hill town where you hike to Little Adam’s Peak in the morning (45 minutes each way) and eat a generous rice and curry for 400 rupees at lunch. The Nine Arches Bridge, a brick railway viaduct built without steel during the colonial period, is a 20-minute walk from the center — trains cross it several times a day.
The food everywhere is generous: a rice and curry plate with five or six side dishes costs about 2 euros at a local eatery.
In Yala National Park, Sri Lankan leopards are among the easiest to spot anywhere in the world. Safaris leave at 5:30 AM by jeep — book the day before through a local guide. You’ll also see elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles. Minneriya National Park, further north, hosts “The Gathering” between July and October: hundreds of elephants congregating around the reservoir.

Which Sri Lankan beaches should you visit and when?
Mirissa for blue whale watching between December and April — boats leave the port at 6 AM. Unawatuna for fine sand and quiet sunsets. Tangalle, more remote, has beachfront guesthouses for 20 to 40 euros a night.
East coast
Trincomalee on the east coast (best May to September) has Nilaveli beach — long, flat, almost empty on weekdays. The west coast is best December to March, the east coast May to September.

- How much does a trip to Sri Lanka cost?
- Between 40 and 80 euros per day per person. A rice and curry plate costs about 2 euros, a 7-hour train ride under 3 euros in second class. Decent accommodation starts at 15-20 euros per night. A jeep safari in Yala runs 30-50 euros per person.
- How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?
- Twelve days for the classic circuit: Colombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, train to Ella, Yala and the south coast. Ten days work if you drop one stop. Two weeks let you add Trincomalee on the east coast or Jaffna in the north.
- Do you need a visa for Sri Lanka?
- Yes. Most nationalities (including EU, US, UK) need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) obtained online before departure. It costs 50 USD and allows a 30-day stay, extendable on arrival. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
